Girl Scout Cookies

Thin Mints. Tagalongs. Caramel Delites. (Feeling your sweet tooth yet?) The annual sale of Girl Scout cookies begins this week. Girl Scouts will be taking orders for all the traditional favorites, plus some new varieties. The customer gets a box of sweet treats, available for sale only during this time of year. But what else is in that box? The sale this year incorporates the theme “Leap 2 Lead — Be the Change.” It encourages girls to take a leadership role in their troop or council sales. Proceeds from the sales help at three levels. The council receives a share, which helps provide programs throughout the year to girls all over the council. The individual troop also gets funds for their programs. And the girl who makes the sale is able to use some of the profit for uniforms, camping trips and other activities. Even if you have overindulged in sweets over the holiday season, there is a way you can help. Purchase boxes of cookies to be sent to military personnel serving in overseas locations who can’t purchase their own. When you encounter a Girl Scout salesman, ask about that option. Either way, you are supporting girls who are trying to pay their own way. Help them have a program that will provide memories that many of them otherwise wouldn’t get to experience. Cookie sales will continue until Feb. 21.
